The Diversified Curriculum Library started as an idea in June 2020 as a direct response to the growing awareness of racial injustice within our country. The goal was to assist educators in increasing diversity within their curriculum and give them a platform to share their diverse curricula materials. With the help of volunteers and the board of directors, we became incorporated in November 2020 and launched in April 2021.

When children cannot find themselves reflected in the books they read, or when the images they see are distorted, negative, or laughable, they learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in the society of which they are a part of.

So often, students don’t find themselves in the curriculum they are taught. When they do see themselves represented, it’s not as the victor, or is negative. Additionally, the stories selected often only show their community’s history and experience in oppression.
